Book of Determination
2004/08

chapter 1

To determine: "To obtain knowledge or awareness of something not
known before, as through observation or study."

"For me to draw something is to know something intimately. It is an attempt to understand the nature of things, starting with their texture: Their skin. I set up the forms in many layers of lines. The result is something that looks like an 19th-century etching, but they are in fact thousands of lines, meticulously drawn with an ordinary Bic-pen. Besides investigating forms and textures of objects and organisms, these drawings look for the tension between separate objects, intending to reveal an unnexpected underlying relationship between the elements."
                                                            chapter 2

The book of Determination is a concept: a work in progress that was started in 2004. In the first chapter the constructed and violent nature of weapons is set against complex textures of organic objects and animals. The compositions are made up of two elements, separated from each other by a fold in the paper. These folds are the basis for the composition and refer to the pages of this imaginary book. The second chapter is still under construction but two drawings are already online: More lyrical in nature, these compositions now look for reconcilliation and elevation.
